Chandika Nanayakkara is a notable figure in Sri Lankan cinema and television, known for his acting prowess. He achieved the prestigious title of the most popular actor at the Sumathi Awards for two consecutive years, 2009 and 2010.[1] His primary focus revolves around television serials, where he has garnered significant recognition.[2]
Personal Background
Nanayakkara's father held the esteemed positions of deputy principal and disciplinary teacher at his school, while his mother played the role of a dedicated homemaker.[3] He shares his family ties with two sisters and a brother. His academic journey led him to the completion of his A/L education at Gankanda National College, Pelmadulla. Notably, during his school years, he secured the third position in an all-island Creative Writing competition.[4]
Path to Acting
During his school years, Nanayakkara's burgeoning interest in drama led him to become a regular attendee of weekly stage dramas held at the school. His dedication to honing his skills persisted as he actively participated in drama seminars hosted by renowned artists like Kaushalya Fernando and Mahendra Perera.[4] In 2003, he emerged victorious in the 'Tharumansala' competition organized by Sirasa TV. Interestingly, his foray into acting was serendipitous. While pursuing studies at the Open University of Sri Lanka, he crossed paths with a friend working on a film set. This encounter led to Nanayakkara taking on a minor role in the movie "Mother Theresa".[4] In 2006, he ventured into producing a tele series titled "Suba Sihina" in collaboration with a friend, and subsequently participated in the creation of the tele production "Haratha Hera".[5] An additional milestone in his career was his involvement in the first Russian television series to be filmed in Sri Lanka.[6]
Nanayakkara's journey extended beyond national borders as well. On November 11, 2008, he participated in the Tharu-Rayak show held in Dubai.[4] Additionally, he proudly represents the role of brand ambassador for Lak Salu Sala. Remarkably, after a 17-year endeavor, he successfully graduated with a Mass Communication degree, a pursuit he initiated in 1994 at the Open University of Sri Lanka.[7]
