Chitra Dhanawalavithana, known by her popular name Chitra Wakishta, was a prominent figure in Sri Lankan cinema, stage drama, and television. Born on December 23, 1936, she is best remembered for her portrayal of Somi Nona in the Kopi Kade teledrama. Her illustrious career spanned over six decades, leaving an indelible mark on the entertainment industry.[1]
Early Life:
Chitra was born in Punchi Borella on December 23, 1936. She received her education at Buddhist Girls' School in Maradana, which was later renamed Sri Sangamiththa Balika Vidyalaya, Colombo 10. She was united in marriage with Lloyd Wakisha, a renowned actor of his time. Lloyd's acting journey encompassed stage drama, including Wes Muhunu, and films like Sihina Hathak, Kinkini Paada, Rena Giraw, Baduth Ekka Horu, Mee Masso, Gehenu Lamai, Adhishtana, Thani Tharuwa, and Wadula. Lloyd, born in 1930, passed away in 1981 at the age of 51. The couple was blessed with three sons - Ranjan, Shammi, Pran - and a daughter. Chitra's granddaughter Senuri also pursued acting, achieving acclaim for her role in the teledrama Appachchi. Senuri garnered several local awards for her performance in the show.[4]
Chitra Wakishta passed away on May 31, 2019, at the age of 82.[5]
Theater Journey:
Chitra's involvement in the entertainment world began in 1945 when she joined Radio Ceylon for the Lama Pitiya program. During this time, she contributed to the program through singing poems and reciting raban poetry. Her stage career commenced during her tenure with Lama Pitiya, marked by her participation in A. M. L. Zoysa's play, "Bahirawaya," in 1953. This marked the beginning of her involvement in various stage productions, including "Deepa," "Piligath Warada," "Pancha Kalyani," and "Sargent Weerasinha." Her rendition of the song "Rasadara Siriya Paradana" in the stage drama "Kalagola" remains a beloved theater piece to this day.[4]

Chitra Wakishta holds a significant place in the history of Sri Lankan television drama. Her television journey commenced with Sri Lanka's inaugural teledrama, "Dimuthumuthu." She gained prominence as a key figure in the longest-running single-episode television serial in South Asia, "Kopi Kade." Her portrayal of Somi Nona garnered widespread recognition and affection from the audience. Chitra's contribution to "Kopi Kade" spanned an impressive 26 years before her retirement due to health reasons. She also graced television screens in other serials, including "Vajira," "Mal Kekulak Iki Binda," and "Himagiri Arana."
