Gammada Liyanage Cletus Paulinus Mendis, widely known as Cletus Mendis (born on July 17, 1949), is a renowned Sri Lankan actor who has left his mark primarily in the realms of cinema and television. His remarkable talent has garnered him numerous accolades, particularly for his skillful portrayal of villains, recognized at prestigious events such as the Sarasaviya, OCIC, Raigam, and Presidential film festivals.
Tragically, Cletus's elder brother, Vinicius Mendis, passed away in October 2019 at the age of 75.[1]
Personal Life:
In 1987, Cletus Mendis entered into matrimony with Dorrin Jayakody, and their union has been blessed with a single son, born in 1994.
The Path to Acting:
Cletus Mendis embarked on his acting journey by participating in dramas at church festivals in 1971. His engagement extended to teaching gymnastics and martial arts to the youth in Katupotha. A pivotal moment occurred in 1973 when he journeyed to Colombo for an interview with Henry Chandrawansa. It was during this process that he crossed paths with Sugath Samarakoone. In 1977, Mendis took on the role of stunt director for the film "Wanagatha Kella."[2]
Cinematic Odyssey:
Cletus Mendis marked his cinematic debut in 1978 with a supporting role in the epic historical film "Veera Puran Appu." His acting prowess continued to unfold, highlighted by his role in "Yali Pipunu Malak" in 1983. However, it was his portrayal of a villainous character in the 1982 film "Paramitha" that redirected the trajectory of his cinematic journey, firmly establishing him as a sought-after figure in villainous roles for the ensuing decades.[2][3]
Milestones and Honors:
In 2004, Mendis became associated with Vishva Kala Sarasaviya at Mount Lavinia and had the opportunity to collaborate with Udayakantha Warnasuriya. A crowning moment arrived in 2021 when he was bestowed with the prestigious 'Deshabhimani Keerthi Kalabushana' award, a testament to his enduring contributions.[4]
