Jeewan Kumaranatunga, born on November 7, 1958 (Sinhala: ජීවන් කුමාරතුංග), is a versatile figure in Sri Lankan cinema, theater, and television. He later ventured into politics, holding positions as a former parliament member and cabinet minister. Notably, he shares a close family connection with former President Chandrika Kumaratunga and is the nephew of esteemed actor and politician Vijaya Kumaratunga.
Born in Seeduwa, Jeewan's father, Sydney Kumaranatunga, was a notable film actor known for his role in "Ran Onchilla." The legacy of acting runs deep in his family, with his uncle Vijaya being a renowned actor and politician. Jeewan received his education at Carey College in Colombo. His grandfather, Benjamin Ralahami, also contributed to the arts, acting in several plays during the Towerhall era.
Jeewan is married to his longtime partner, Sherin, and they have been blessed with two daughters, Malsha and Maleesha, as well as a son named Harshamana. In a testament to the family's engagement in public service, Jeewan's daughter, Malsha, successfully contested the Colombo district seat on the Western Provincial Council in 2014.
Jeevan's artistic journey commenced with school plays during his time at Carey College in Colombo. Encouraged by Bermin Laili Fernando, he took the stage and continued his involvement in theater even after leaving school. His passion led him to establish the Sarasavi art circle and stage plays in his village.
Initially, Jeevan embarked on his acting journey as a stage performer, eventually transitioning to cinema. His initial film role came in "Thani Tharuwa" in 1982, but it was "Ganga Addara" that marked his first on-screen appearance. Over his career, he acted in more than 90 films, spanning various genres and often portraying antagonistic characters.
Jeewan's cinema career blossomed through his own production, "Hitha Honda Chandiya," and included hits like "Næva Gilūnath Bǣn Chūn," "Mamayi Rajā," "Nommara 17," "Okkoma Rajavaru," "Hitha Honda Sellam," "Rajadaruvō," and "Come ō Gō Chicāgō." His pairing with Anoja Weerasinghe became iconic, with films like "Mamai Raja," "Obata Rahasak Kiyannam," and "Randenigala Sinhaya" capturing audiences' hearts. His dedication and talent earned him the prestigious Sarasaviya award for Most Popular Actor in 1990.
Jeewan's contributions extended to television serials and film production, where he produced seven films. However, as his political commitments increased, he gradually shifted away from film production. His political journey began with the Southern Provincial Council election in 1991, followed by successful campaigns in subsequent elections. He served in various ministerial roles in the parliament for 23 years, successfully running and winning in five elections.
