Born on May 19, 1955, in Colombo, Sri Lanka, Lakshman Mendis hails from a politically active background. His father, Reggie Mendis, was a former member of the Central Committee of the Lanka Sama Samaja Party (LSSP). Reggie, who was born in Moratuwa, initially worked as a church clerk in his childhood. He played a crucial role as the Secretary of the Board of Education for the ancient Lanka Sama Samaja Party, emphasizing the importance of educating party members in Marxism. In the early 1940s, Reggie joined the Bolshevik Leninist Party, and his leadership during the 1952 nationwide Hartal War in Pettah Place was prominent. Sadly, Reggie's life was cut short when he died in December 2014. His hand was broken near his wrist while protecting Colvin R. de Silva from an oncoming bomb during a rally in 1955, as one of the robed men detonated a bomb.
Lakshman received his education at Royal College, Colombo. Initially, he worked as a clerk at the Embilipitiya paper mill but was eventually expelled for political reasons. Under the guidance of his father's friend, Lakshman pursued studies in gemology and subsequently operated a successful gem business for 11 years. He later became a renowned gem merchant in Kahawatta.
Lakshman is happily married to Geetha Shyamali of Balangoda, and together they have a son and a daughter. His son is currently studying gemology at the University of Moratuwa and is actively involved in the gem business. Meanwhile, his daughter is pursuing a degree in psychology at the University of Cambridge, England.
