Pubudu Chathuranga, whose full name is Eththiligoda Vidana Gamage Pubudu Chathuranga, is a highly talented and versatile figure in the realm of Sri Lankan cinema, theater, and television. He is not only an accomplished actor but has also worked as a model, TV presenter, and screenplay writer.
Born on 12th November 1982 in Kithulampitiya, Galle, Pubudu's mother, Lalitha Indrani Weththasinghe, hails from Colombo and settled in Galle after marrying his father, E.V.G Somasiri, in the 1970s. Pubudu has a sister named Dushanthi Thamodini, who is married to Sisira Kalansooriya. The name "Pubudu" signifies "blossoming of wisdom," while "Chathuranga" symbolizes four noble qualities.
He attended Richmond College in Galle, the same school his father had attended. As a student, Pubudu excelled academically, winning the primary best student award and achieving outstanding results in the Ordinary Level exams. After completing his Advanced Level, he was selected to pursue higher education in Engineering (HNDE). However, his passion for the arts led him to delve deeper into the field of entertainment instead.
In 2016, Pubudu began a romantic relationship with model Mashi Siriwardene, and in 2017, Mashi was crowned NSBM Avurudu Kumariya. The couple tied the knot on 15th March 2018 in a ceremony held at Cinnamon Grand Hotel, Colombo. Mashi, later on, pursued a career in acting, making supportive appearances in films such as "The Newspaper" and "Nihanda Sewaneli."
Pubudu's journey in the performing arts commenced during his early years at school, where he participated in various stage dramas, including "Mahadana Muththa" and Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar." He went on to establish his own theater group during grade 12 and produced his theatrical works like "Miriguwa" and "Histhanak." He ventured into television with the teledrama "Samanala Kandawura," directed by Prof. Ariyarathna Athugala, which contributed to his rising popularity. Notable appearances in TV series like "Sara" (2006) earned him recognition, and he garnered acclaim by winning the best actor award at Raigam Tele'es for his role in "One Way." His talent and versatility led to numerous nominations and awards for his work in television.
In 2004, Pubudu made his film debut with the comedic youth film "Hiripoda Wassa," which earned him critical acclaim and a Sarasaviya Award. Subsequently, his supporting roles in movies like "Tharaka Mal" (2006) and "Dancing Stars" (2007), as well as his leading role in "Kanyavi" (2007), brought him further recognition, including a merit award from SIGNIS Awards. He even appeared in the internationally acclaimed film "Machan" (2008) by Uberto Pasolini.
Pubudu's remarkable acting skills were acknowledged with several nominations and wins, such as the Best Actor award at the Derana Lux Film Awards for his role in "Challenges" (2011) and the Best Actor award at Raigam Tele'es for his portrayal of 'Dr. Thejana' in the TV drama "One Way" (2016).
One of his notable successes was the teledrama "Ran Samanalayo," where he played the lead role, making it one of the most popular teledramas in Sri Lanka for two consecutive years. His impressive acting range was evident when he won the Best Actor in a negative role for his performance in the film "Sakkarang" (2018) and the Best Actor in a Comedy role for the movie "Maya 3D" (2019) at the Presidential Film Awards.
Apart from his acting endeavors, Pubudu also demonstrated his writing skills by penning the script for the movie "Sara," which was based on a TV serial, a first of its kind in Sri Lanka. His contributions as a scriptwriter extended to successful films like "Pravegaya" and "Maaya 3D."
In addition to his acting and writing pursuits, Pubudu showcased his charisma as a TV presenter, hosting popular musical chats like "Sikurada Rae" on Derana TV and two editions of the "Hiru Golden Film Awards." His teledramas, such as "Suddi," "Kasiwatta," and "Modarawella," further cemented his popularity in the entertainment landscape.
