Ayasuriya Arachchige Dona Mary Yvonne Perera, known by her stage name Sandhya Kumari, was a renowned Sri Lankan actress who specialized in portraying femme fatale characters in early Sinhala cinema. She was born on 6th January 1945 in Colombo and was married to Upali Perera.
Sandhya Kumari made her debut in the film industry with the 1963 movie "Adata Wadiya Heta Hondai," where she shared the screen with notable actors such as Gamini Fonseka, Jeevarani Kurukulasooriya, Ananda Jayaratne, Nelson Karunagama, and Vijitha Mallika. Her performance in this film garnered her significant recognition and popularity. In 1964, she took on the role of the leading lady in "Dheewarayo," a film centered around fisherfolk. Additionally, she appeared in "Allapu Gedera" in 1965.
Throughout her career, Sandhya Kumari appeared in several other notable films, including "Patachara," "Ipadunay Aiye?," "Ran Rasa," "Sura Chowraya" (1967), "Akka Nago," "Amathikama," "Ataweni Pudumaya," "Bicycle Hora," "Hangi Hora," "Pini Bindu" (1968), "Kawda Hari," "Sooraygeth Sooraya" (1969, featuring a fight sequence with Sonia Dissanayake), and "Sakuntala."
Sandhya Kumari's talent and performances made her a prominent figure in Sinhala cinema during her time. She left a lasting impact on the industry with her portrayal of captivating and alluring characters. Sadly, Sandhya Kumari passed away on 2nd June 1994, leaving behind a legacy as one of Sri Lanka's beloved actresses.
