Hiddadura Jude Neil Sriyantha Mendis, born on October 25, 1957, commonly known as Sriyantha Mendis (Sinhala: ශ්රියන්ත මෙන්ඩිස්), is a renowned actor in Sri Lankan cinema, theater, and television.[2][3] Known for his exceptional versatility, Mendis has garnered numerous accolades, including multiple awards for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor at local award ceremonies.[4]
Mendis, born on October 25, 1957, in Ragama, Sri Lanka, is the eldest sibling in a family of three. His father, Hiddadura Lazarus Mendis, worked as a timekeeper at the Ceylon Transport Board and later became an executive officer at Sri Lanka Ports Authority.[5] His mother, Eliadura Karoline Soyza, was a teacher at Holy Family Convent in Bambalapitiya and also practiced music at Haywood. Sriyantha's grandfather, Hiddadura Juan Mendis, was a devout Catholic, while his maternal grandfather was Eliyadura Evgeny Zoysa and his mother was Welisarage Juliana Fernando. Sriyantha's parents got married on October 17, 1956. He has a younger brother named Ajith and a younger sister named Menik. Sriyantha's father passed away on July 25, 2007, at the age of 79.[6]
He completed his education at De Mazenod College in Kandana. Although he did not participate in any aesthetic activities during his school years, he excelled in karate. He started his teaching career at Pokuwagonna Maha Vidyalaya in Ganewatta, located far from Polgahawela, Kurunegala.[5] On July 7, 1979, he became a science teacher at St. Bernadette's College in Polgahawela. He went on to serve as a teacher for 32 years in various schools across the island.[7]
Mendis is married to Kusum Renu, a renowned actress in Sinhala cinema, stage, and television.[8] He first met Renu during the stage drama Pandukabhaya in 1984, and the couple got married on October 25, 1986, following a proposal in April 1985.[9] They have been blessed with two daughters.
