Suvineetha Weerasinghe, also known as සුවිනීතා වීරසිංහ in Sinhala, is a highly versatile actress in Sri Lankan cinema, theater, and television. With a career spanning over five decades, Weerasinghe has garnered critical acclaim for her roles in films such as Sikuruliya, Welikathara, Yuganthaya, and Sudo Sudu.
In her personal life, Weerasinghe's father served as an ex-gunman in the Army, while her mother was a housewife. She attended Buddhist Girls College in Mount Lavinia until grade 5 and then transferred to Dehiwela Madya Maha Vidyalaya. During her school years, she excelled in athletics and was a skilled netball shooter. She also completed all three stages of Kandyan dancing. After completing school, she initially enrolled in Indigenous Medical College for a four-year course but decided to leave during her third year to pursue a career in the cinema industry.
Weerasinghe was first married to the late Tissa Abeysekara, a renowned director in Sinhala cinema. From her second marriage to Sarath Kongahage, she has a son named Devinda Kongahage, who is also a director in Sinhala cinema.
In addition to her film career, Weerasinghe has made notable appearances in television serials such as H. D. Premaratne's Sandun Gira Gini Ganee and Dharmasena Pathiraja's adaptation of Anton Chekhov's Lady with the Little Dog. She has also served as a judge on the reality show Guwan Prathibha Prabha in the drama category. Furthermore, she contested from the National List of the Democratic National Alliance in the 2010 General Election.
Weerasinghe's cinematic journey began with the 1962 film Suhada Divi Piduma, directed by Robin Tampoe. Throughout her career, she has acted in numerous popular films, including Sudo Sudu, Sikuruliya, Anupama, and Welikathara.
She received the Merit Award at the Presidential Film Awards in 1985 for her performance in Sathi Pooja.
