Inspired by the experience and motivated by her encounter with renowned actress Malini Fonseka, Vishaka aspired to become an actress. With the assistance of Siri Kularatne's brother, who was her classmate, she had the opportunity to meet Siri Kularatne, leading to her debut role in the film Anuradha in 1981 alongside Malini Fonseka. However, it was Saaranga, directed by Gamini Hewawitharana, that marked her first screen appearance.
Following the success of Saaranga, Vishaka starred in films such as Sanasanna Maa and Yahalu Yeheli in 1982. In 1984, she appeared in Kokila, Podi Ralahami, and Sasara Chethana, for which she received the Sarasaviya Award for Best Emerging Actress at the 13th Sarasaviya Awards in 1985. Despite facing challenges due to her husband's accident, she made a comeback with the film Sandamadala, directed by Malani Fonseka. Her exceptional portrayal in Sura Duthiyo earned her the Best Performance Award at the 13th OCIC Award Ceremony in 1986. Vishaka further showcased her talent in films like Puthuni Mata Samavenna, Asipatha Mamai, Sathyagrahanaya, Kristhu Charithaya, Cheriyo Doctor, Yasoma, and Bheeshanaye Athuru Kathawak.
In addition to her cinematic contributions, Vishaka made a notable impact on television, particularly with her portrayal of villainous characters. Her role as "Rathu Akka" in the television serial Isuru Gira brought her widespread popularity.
