Dilhani Ashokamala Ekanayake (Sinhala: දිල්හානි ඒකනායක; born 4 March 1970) is a versatile artist who has left her mark on Sri Lankan cinema, theater, and television. Renowned as one of the most esteemed actresses in Sinhala cinema, Ekanayake has been honored with multiple awards for her outstanding performances.
Personal Life
For her early education, Ekanayake attended St. Clare's Girls School in Colombo. She is wedded to Priyankara Perera, a singer and actor, who is the son of the renowned singer Milton Perera. The couple is blessed with a son named Dilmin Perera. In the latter part of 2020, her husband Priyankara faced a critical health situation when he was diagnosed with kidney failure. This necessitated hospitalization and the need for a kidney transplant, specifically of the A+ or O+ blood type.
Career
Before stepping onto the cinematic stage, Ekanayake's talent was showcased in ballet performances such as Vishwa Geethaya and Saama. In 1987, she collaborated with Channa Wijewardena to present the ballet "Ukussa." Ekanayake marked her cinema debut in the 1991 film "Dedunnen Samanaliyak," directed by Yasapalitha Nanayakkara. This marked the beginning of her cinematic journey, and her exceptional talent was swiftly recognized as she was awarded the Sarasaviya award for Best Upcoming Actress that same year. The momentum continued into 1992 when she clinched the Most Popular Actress award at the same festival.
Initially cast in commercial films, Ekanayake's charisma, graceful dance moves, and trademark smile captivated audiences. Often referred to as the "Sridevi of Sri Lanka," her career took a significant turn when she portrayed an abandoned Tamil girl in Asoka Handagama's film "Me Mage Sandai." This powerful portrayal paved the way for further remarkable performances in films such as "Sudu Kalu Saha Alu" (Shades of Grey), "Mage Wam Atha" (My Left Hand), and "Sulanga" (Wind).
