In his personal life, Sanath Wimalasiri is the son of Jhonney Wimalasiri and Prema Thalgahagoda, both retired aesthetic teacher instructors. His brother, Mahinda, is a senior lecturer at the University of Visual Arts and is also involved in the field of drama. Sanath received his education from Weuda Central College in Kurunegala, D.M. Gunarathna Maha Vidyalaya in Matale, St. Thomas' College in Matale, and Kingswood College in Kandy. He is happily married to Vineetha Erandathi, who works as a teacher at Sri Jayewardenepura Balika Vidyalaya. The couple has been blessed with two daughters.
Sanath Wimalasiri's acting career began during his time at Kingswood College, where he participated in stage dramas. His first stage acting opportunity came through the play "Kethumathi," produced by Upali Thilanka Hewage. Later, under the guidance of his teacher Amitha Rabbidigala, Wimalasiri joined Ediriweera Sarachchandra's theater group. He gained recognition for his performances in Sarachchandra's acclaimed plays such as "Maname" and "Sinhabahu." In 1996, he made his debut in television serials with the role in the serial "Nedayo," directed by Nalan Mendis. In 2003, he ventured into cinema with his first film, "Sonduru Dadabima," directed by Anura Horatious. However, his most notable acting achievement came in the comedy film "Sri Last Chance."
