Roshan Pilapitiya Abhayasinghe, born on 21st March 1975 in Hanguranketha, Sri Lanka, is a versatile actor in Sri Lankan cinema, theater, and television. He is also known for his singing talent. Pilapitiya has primarily made his mark in television serials and has been recognized with the Most Popular Actor award at the Sumathi Tele Awards in 2003 and 2004.
Born as the youngest of four children, Roshan hails from a family with a strong connection to the entertainment industry. His father, Ariya Abhayasinghe, was a tea plantation owner, while his mother, Mallika Pilapitiya, was a retired actress renowned for her lead role in Sri Lanka's first outdoor movie, "Rekava," directed by Lester James Peries. Mallika Pilapitiya passed away on 26th March 2022 at the age of 86.
Roshan received his primary education at C. C. College in Hanguranketha, followed by secondary education at Dharmaraja College in Kandy. He excelled in college stage dramas and was a member of the school's esteemed drama crew in 1988. His talent earned him the award for the best actor in inter-school competitions in the same year. Roshan is deeply rooted in his family and follows the principles of Buddhism. He has two older brothers, Kapila and Chathura, as well as an older sister named Thrishara. Roshan often expresses his love for his family in public and speaks highly of their support.
In 2001, Roshan began dating popular actress Chathurika Pieris, although they later separated in 2013. In 2017, he married Ridma Perera, and the couple has a son named Rahul.
Roshan's career started during the JVP insurrection period from 1987 to 1989 when he worked in a musical band. He made his acting debut in Lester James Peries' teledrama "Golu Hadawatha." He was also a singer and performed in the band Red Heart as a guitarist, keyboard player, and vocalist. His first film was an English film titled "Disco Girl" in 1990. Notably, he took on the lead role in the remake of the film "Hatharadenaama Soorayo" in 2008, originally led by Vijaya Kumaratunga.
Pilapitiya's acting journey began with the teledrama "Golu Hadawatha" in 1988, directed by renowned filmmaker Lester James Peries. In 2002, he received a Presidential award for Best Upcoming Actor. He has played pivotal roles in several commercial successes such as "Mandakini" (1999), "Daru Upatha" (2001), "Rajjumala" (2004), and "Dhana Rina" (2007).
