Dian Hemamali Sangeetha Weeraratne, also known as Sangeetha Weeraratne (born December 13, 1973), is a prominent Sri Lankan film actress in the local cinema industry. She made her debut at the age of sixteen in Roy de Silva's film "It's a Matter of Time" in 1990, starring alongside Kamal Addararachchi. However, her breakthrough came with H.D. Premaratne's "Saptha Kanya" in 1993, again opposite Kamal Addararachchi. The film was a tremendous success, and she received the Sarasaviya Best Newcomer Award that year. Since then, she has appeared in over 50 movies and is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished stars in the Sri Lankan film industry.
In her personal life, Sangeetha Weeraratne is the second daughter of renowned cinematographer Timothy Weeraratne and Daisy Weeraratne. She completed her primary education at St. John's College in Panadura and later attended Methodist College in Colombo for her secondary studies. She has an older sister, Nayanatara Weeraratne, who currently resides in Australia. Sangeetha married businessman Roshantha Kariyapperuma in December 2002. Her husband, along with his older brother Priyantha Kariyapperuma, owns and jointly operates Voice of Asia Network (Pvt) Ltd, the largest media network in Sri Lanka.
Sangeetha's career in the film industry began with her debut in Roy de Silva's "It's a Matter of Time" in 1991. She had the privilege of working alongside popular stars of that era, such as Malini Fonseka, Vijaya Kumaratunga, Gamini Fonseka, and Roy de Silva. In 2001, she won the Sarasaviya Best Actress Award for her role as Guneris' wife in Bennet Ratnayake's "Aswesuma." She also received the Sarasaviya Most Popular Actress award for three consecutive years from 2001 to 2003.
Throughout her career, Sangeetha has delivered memorable dramatic performances in films like "Saptha Kanya," "Nomiyena Minisun," "Maruthaya," "Duwata Mawaka Misa," "Dorakada Marawa," "Kinihiriya Mal," "Aswesuma," "Salelu Warama," and "Dheewari." She has also showcased her talent in blockbuster comedy movies such as the "Dawal Migel Ra Daniyel" series and "Sapata Dukata Sunny."
In addition to her film work, Sangeetha presented a television documentary program called "Gedara Dora" in 2000, which explored topics related to architecture, interior design, and landscaping. She also appeared in the television serial "Theertha Tharanaya" in 2003, directed by Bermin Lylie Fernando, after a seven-year hiatus.
Sangeetha ventured into production with her first film, "Sewwandi," directed by Vasantha Obeysekera, in 2006. Her most recent dramatic film is "Uppalawanna," directed by Prof. Sunil Ariyaratne, where she portrayed the characters of Upuli and later the bhikkhuni (Buddhist nun). "Uppalawanna" received critical acclaim.
In 2021, Sangeetha Weeraratne featured in the Raffealla Fernando Celebrity Calendar alongside numerous other Sri Lankan celebrities.
