Suraj Mapa, the youngest among his two elder sisters, was born on 2 January 1980 in Kandy, Sri Lanka. His father was a businessman, and his mother took care of the household. He completed his education at Trinity College, Kandy, and successfully passed his Advanced Level examination in 1999.
Following his education, Suraj pursued a Diploma in Hotel Management and attended a course in the field. He gained practical experience by working for one year at his father's hotel, called 'Hotel Zurich Park.' Alongside his hotel management studies, Suraj also enrolled in IDM and obtained a Diploma in Computer Studies. During this time, he worked as a customer care executive for 'Suntel.' Additionally, Suraj ventured into modeling and had the opportunity to walk the ramp for renowned fashion designer Lou Ching Wong and popular hairdresser Nayana. Later on, he further expanded his qualifications by obtaining certifications in Marketing through SLIM.
Tragically, Suraj's father passed away on 13 July 2016, while his mother, Dayani Mapa, succumbed to a brain clot on 17 August 2018. His mother's sister, Suneetha Ratnayake, was a prominent dancer known in her own right.

In 2000, Suraj began his acting career with the television serial "Mage Sanda Oba," directed by Prasanna Vithanage. His portrayal of the main character earned him immense popularity, and he was recognized with the Upcoming Actor award in 2002. Early on, he gained further recognition through the serial "Suriya Daruwo" in 2002. A turning point in his career came with the lead role in the serial "Olu," directed by Shirly P. Delankawala, for which he received a nomination for Best Upcoming Actor in 2003. Suraj won the Most Popular Actor award at the Sumathi Awards and Raigam Tele'es awards in 2005 and 2006, respectively, for his role in "Olu." He also received the Most Popular Sri Lankan Actor award in the UAE in 2005. Suraj's other notable television appearances include "Pooja," where he portrayed the role of a famous writer named Nirmala.
In addition to his television work, Suraj has acted in films, starting with a supporting role in the 2004 comedy film "Clean Out" directed by Roy de Silva. He also appeared in the Belgian film "Semi Tower." One of his notable film roles was in the blockbuster hit "Sikuru Hathe" directed by Giriraj Kaushalya, which became the highest-grossing film of 2007. In 2019, he appeared in the film "Uththara."
Apart from television serials and films, Suraj has also participated in single-episode teledramas like "Sansara Sewanali - Podi Hamuduruwo" and "Thunkal Sihinaya," as well as the telefilm "Mathaka Sihina."
