Lokupathirage Janak Premalal, born on May 15, 1959, with the Sinhala name ජනක් ප්රේමලාල්, is a prominent figure in Sri Lankan cinema, stage drama, and television. His versatility as an actor is evident in his prolific contributions, particularly in the realm of television, where he has impressively appeared in over 200 television serials.
Early Life:
Born in Karannagoda, Janak Premalal comes from a family rooted in the arts and education. His father, Sirisena Premalal, is a scriptwriter and a teacher at Govinna Senior School since 1952. His mother, Daya Weerakkody, also served as a teacher at Govinna Primary School. Janak's educational journey began at Govinna Primary School, followed by Horana Sripali Vidyalaya. He later pursued his studies at Vidyarathana College in Horana, where he completed his education up to grade 8. A close-knit family, Janak has a brother who serves as an army officer.
Janak Premalal pursued higher education in the commerce stream, successfully completing his A/Ls. He then furthered his studies at the Faculty of Commerce at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, specializing in Property Administration & Valuation Science. Subsequently, he embarked on a professional path, commencing work as a valuation officer at the Department of Assessments and Taxation in 1982. In 1984, he ventured into education, assuming the role of an economics teacher at his alma mater, Vidyarathana College, Horana. He dedicated thirty years to this profession, retiring in 2014.
Married to his longtime partner Gnanothra, Janak and his wife are parents to a daughter, Sasikala, and a son, Gayanjith. Sasikala pursued a degree in chemistry at the University of Peradeniya, while Gayanjith graduated in IT from the University of Moratuwa.
Acting Career:
Janak Premalal's passion for acting was ignited during his school years, as he took on his first stage role at the age of 18 in the play "Kathawak Athara Hadiyak," produced by Ariyapala Pathirajha. In a testament to his early talent, the play secured the top position at the All Island Drama Competition in 1976. His journey in television began with minor roles in serials like "Hathpana" and "Siw Mansala." However, his breakthrough in television came with the main role in the 1993 serial "Sandagiri Pawwa."
Venturing into the cinematic realm, Janak Premalal made his debut in the 1993 film "Guru Gedara," directed by Vijaya Darma Sri, portraying a minor uncredited role.
