Sadda Vidda Rajapakse Palanga Pathira Ambakumarage Ranjan Leo Sylvester Alphonsu, born on 11 March 1963, is widely known as Ranjan Ramanayake. He is a former Sri Lankan politician, actor, film director, singer, and scriptwriter who has made notable contributions to Sinhala language films. Additionally, he served as a Member of Parliament and held several ministerial positions.
Ramanayake served as the State Minister of Highways and Road Development from 2018 to 2019. He also held the position of Deputy Minister of Social Services, Welfare, and Livestock Development under the Good Governance government in 2015, as well as Deputy Minister of Social Empowerment and Welfare from 2015 to 2018. Throughout his career, Ramanayake received numerous accolades, including the Sarasaviya Best Actor Award and the Most Popular Actor title for 16 consecutive years. He has appeared in over 75 Sinhalese films spanning various genres, including romance, action, and comedy. His career started in theatre, stage performances, and television series.
Born in Negombo, Ramanayake is the youngest of two children. His father, Simon Alphonsu, served as a District Inspector at the Sri Lanka Railways Department. As a tribute to filmmaker Somaratne Ramanayake, who played a pivotal role in his film career, he added 'Ramanayake' to his name.
In August 2019, Ramanayake garnered attention when he appeared for the GCE A/L exam after a gap of 37 years, aspiring to pursue a career in law. His A/L results, which he publicly shared on social media on 27 December 2019, went viral. Despite failing in the Christianity subject, he qualified to study law after obtaining an A pass in General English and S passes in Political Science and Communication Media Studies.
Ramanayake's film career began with a leading role in the commercial film "Jaya Kothenada," although his first film appearance was in Dr. Sunil Ariyaratne's "Christhu Charithaya" in a crowded scene. Throughout the 1990s, he maintained his status as a commercial film star. While he occasionally ventured into more serious roles, such as in Lester James Peries' "Awaragira," Ramanayake is predominantly known for his commercial roles. In 1998, he won the Sarasaviya Award for Best Upcoming Actor for his performance in "Hima Gira." He holds the record for being the Popular Actor in the Sarasaviya Festival from 2002 to 2016, with a remarkable 14 wins.
In recent years, Ramanayake has taken on more responsibility as a director and screenwriter for his commercial film roles. His films, including "Parliament Jokes," "One Shot," and "Leader," have broken box office records, solidifying his position as one of the most successful leading actors and directors in Sinhala cinema. He often shares the screen with actors Bandu Samarasinghe and Tennyson Cooray.
Furthermore, Ramanayake has showcased his singing talent in several films, including "Jaya Kothenada," "Naralowa Holman," and "Love in Bangkok." His song "Ran Samanala Joduwa Wage" has been particularly well-received among his other musical contributions.
While he has acted in a few television serials, Ranjan Ramanayake has primarily made his mark in the film industry, leaving a lasting impact on Sinhala cinema.
